Post with 1 note
And yet I can’t think of anything to say. So this is an entirely useless post.
I’ve been writing, though. I’ll finish this one. Actually finish something. I’m not saying it’s good, but it’s almost done. So that’s a plus. Maybe after I’ve successfully gotten something else out of me, I’ll be able to do Carnie justice.

I mean…
How charming, my friend.

Mostly because I have no time.
Moved into Dakin Hall for the May term. There is certainly a reason they call it “Dirty Dakin”. It is nasty here. Though, I actually really like my room. If I could get that room in a different hall, it would be perfect.
Taking Stage Combat this month. We’ve already had three classes and I love it. This week we are working on comedic fight scenes. We’ve learned basics, such as slaps, punches, kicks, headbutts, strangling, and falls, but we have also been putting scenes together of our own. I’ve done two really good ones thus far, and I am working on my “Comedic Showcase” for tomorrow’s class. One of the two that I have done was with the same girl that I’m doing the Showcase with. I played a vampire and she played a clumsy baker. My vampire wasn’t really great at getting what he wanted, not assisted by the baker who kept dodging, unknowingly. The hardest part about the scene was that we never made eye contact once, which is usually the biggest part of stage combat - she wasn’t supposed to know that I was trying to bite her. So there was a lot of me jumping all over the place and getting unintentionally slapped by her. A lot of fun. This time, I am playing a Southern Reverend giving a sermon on patience and self-control who loses it when the narcoleptic in the front row keeps falling asleep. He tries to play off beating the girl by saying that he is curing her of her demons, but he is really just getting out his anger. I’m also really excited to start dramatic fight scenes. Those are going to be REALLY fun.
I’ve started writing a short story. If I finish this one, I’ll probably start on another with the same characters and give them a different adventure. The Adventures of Vincent and Ghost. Cute title, I’ve been told.
Finished Firefly this week and watched the accompanying movie, Serenity. So good. Honestly, probably one of the best written shows I’ve seen, if not the best. It would for sure be up there with Sherlock and Dexter.
Things seem to be going really well. I’m happy. Which is a new concept for me.
I don’t really miss home all that much. It’ll be good going back for a week or two, but I’ll want to escape shortly after.
No word on colleges, though…I’ve weighed out a lot of things in my mind…
I guess that’s it tumblr. I haven’t given a really reflective post in a while. Maybe soon…
Let’s have a recap, shall we?
I made it into the first college production that I auditioned for. Played a stoner named Kenny. Started making friends with a lot of upperclassmen. Met this really cute girl at the cast party and decided to be her friend for a bit. Learned basic lighting design and “designed” for the 10 minute scenes. Passed all of my classes and made some of my professors love me.
Got into Jayne’s self-written and directed play. Got cast as a lovable white supremacist Bobby Reyburn in Coyote on a Fence after crazy intense call-backs. Found my group of friends and felt at home with them. Directed Asylum. Designed lights for Loose Dirt and acted in it. Again, passed all my classes and made some of the other faculty members like me a lot. Got two Red Carpets. Remember that cute girl from the Fuddy Meers cast party? She’s my girlfriend now. Talked to Jayne about what would happen if I stayed and how she would get me an internship in Chicago.
I think it was a great year.
The biggest update so far…
Well, I have a girlfriend. That seems to be pretty sweet. I’m liking it plenty so far.
And yes. It’s HER.
Cheers to that.
In conclusion, I leave you with a song:
Question with 1 note
Anonymous asked: stop shitting on the people who gave you your start. how would you even know if you liked theatre unless you had gotten involved during high school? remember how you were going to be a history teacher?
I assume you are referring to the fact that I said that the Cheverus musical was going to be terrible? Well, my dear reader, you’re right, I wouldn’t have known. But I got involved and then took what I could from it and moved on. Cheverus Drama is not good, I hate to say it. If you look at actually good theater, CDS is hardly a shadow of that. Ask around, people will tell you. I can think of a faculty member who hates going to the shows because he actually knows how beautiful theater can be.
So, I thank CDS for getting me into theater. There you go. As for the rest? It was terrible then and it is terrible now. Until they get actual resources or, better yet, a decent director, it will remain that way. Not like it has a big turnout into the post-high school world, either. Only two theater majors have come out of there in the past at least 7ish years. Says a lot, doesn’t it?
I would like to add that there is one person in CDS right now (well…they will graduate this year) who actually understands theater and without them, it will crumble even more. Gotta have good techies.
Well, all of my friends are out at a party, except for Jared, who is down in Portland. I can’t go to the party because her ex boyfriend is there and neither of us want anything to get started. But that leaves me here, alone. Alone and bored.
And so I write. Or read. And wait…until I have someone to do something with.
Turns out that I swept them up.
Red Carpet for Bobby Reyburn.
Red Carpet for Lighting Design (meant the world that Stan gave it to me. I honestly can not express in words how much I owe him. He has taught me so much.)
My Paper Plate Award (everyone gets one) was a duel award for ‘The Ultimate Bromance Award’ with my best friend, Sherlock Holmes. Again, meant more than words can express. Ironically enough, he went to Cheverus tonight to go see Two By Two. Hope he got some laughs…whether it was at their expense or not, I really can’t say.
And he gave me the Silver Suzie (given by APO members, the theater fraternity, to individuals of their choosing.) - I got a tinfoil joint, reminiscent of Kenny from Fuddy Meers where I met him.
That, plus I won Vice President for Student Theater UMF for next year.
And the Outstanding Leadership Award from Kenny earlier.
I think I have made a name for myself here……..
They are awards for the theater productions done on campus here. I think it is a cool idea, but a lot of people put way more weight on them than they deserve. Because honestly, it is just a piece of paper - you should know if you did a good performance or not. Plus, it is judged by audience members who will a) relate with certain characters more than others or b) be biased and just vote for their favorite people. So for those people who complain about not having enough Red Carpets….stop. If you don’t have an award, it doesn’t mean you aren’t good. I would happily give up any award that I get tonight in order for Jared to somehow manage to get one for every show (which would make 4) for him to shove in a certain someone’s face. A certain someone who complains about not having enough Red Carpets - you have to be cast in shows to get Red Carpets.
In any case, there’s that. I feel bad that I don’t post on here that much, but I’m super busy. Loose Dirt went up last night. It’s…alright. I mean, not the best show ever and the lights have their own issues that I can’t fix. But it’s resume material, especially since I am a freshman who has never taken a course in it. Got some good pictures of the lights as well.
